Project: Product Testing Data
Acquisition |
| Overview:
Our
customer, a Georgia based testing company, needed a system to monitor and
log torque, position, and velocity on a lever arm as it was actuated. |
Application
Objectives
- The
Omron CJ1M PLC was chosen for the following reasons:
- The
on board I/O capability of the CPU
- The
ability of the CPU to convert raw data into a .csv formatted file
and store the file to the removable 128M compact flash card
- Analog
inputs were used for the torque, position and velocity sensor voltage
level detection.
- The
compact size of the PLC and enclosure provided the customer with the
ability to move the monitoring system to various test stands as
needed.
- Omron
CX Programmer programming software was used for PLC program
development and documentation.
- Cross
Automation provided all programming and start up services.

Design
Challenges
- The
system had to be PLC based
- Use
components the engineering and testing staff were familiar with
- Data
sampling rate needed to be variable between .1 & 100 Hz
- The
data needed to be portable
Design Objectives
- Provide
a low cost hardware platform
- Acquire
data at rates up to 100 Hz
- Time-stamping
of data files
- Provide
data from the system in a .CSV format

Customer
Benefits
-
A reliable method
of acquiring test data on an inexpensive hardware platform.
-
Test data formatted
directly in the PLC – no need for interpretive software
-
The ability to use
removable compact flash memory cards directly in the PLC CPU provided
data portability without the need for network connectivity
- A
single source automation solution
