Solving Two Critical Sensor Applications

Overview: Our client, a manufacturer of custom material handling machines in North Carolina, had need for two very critical sensor applications to be solved on a custom machine that folds and glues tissue boxes.
Application Objectives
  • Provide a sensor to detect if more than one cardboard tissue box is being fed.

  • Provide a second sensor to detect the presence of the plastic window on the cardboard box.

Design Challenges
  • Physical size of the sensors

  • Mounting of the sensors

  • Thickness of the cardboard boxes is only a few 1/1000ths of inch thick

  • Thickness of the plastic window is less than the cardboard

System Solutions
  • Solved the first application for detecting more than one cardboard tissue box with the Omron E3S-CL1 background suppression sensor

  • Solved the second application for detecting the presence of the plastic window with the Omron E3X-NL11 luster sensor

Customer Benefits
  • Machine does not jam due to more than one cardboard box, no downtime.

  • Customer knows if product has plastic window in place, no returns.

  • Omron is the single supplier for their entire sensor needs.
