back to Application Notes

Industry: Medical
Application: Critical Bar Code Application

Overview:
Our client, a manufacturer of medical IV bags in North Carolina, had need for a bar code reader to detect two bar codes and give a match code, mismatch and no read output at a few high rate of speed.

Application Objectives:

  • Provide a bar code reader that could read two bar codes that are very small in size and very close to each other
  • Provide an output for a match code, mismatch code and a no read
  • Provide the ability to tie 5-8 readers per machine together and have the ability to input and output data over device net

Design Challenges:

  • Physical size of the bar code
  • Mounting of the bar code reader
  • Placement of the two bar codes (very close together)
  • Speed at which bar code is moving past reader
  • Bar code is white print instead of the more popular black

System Solutions
  • Solved the bar code portion with the Microscan MS-820 with raster option. We are able to use the Microscan DeviceNet protocol box to tie all of the scanners on each machine back together and connect to the current DeviceNet network. We were able to attain around 200 reads per second

Customer Benefits

  • Customer is able to verify that correct product is in the bag and correct bag is in the correct lot
  • Customer knows that bar code has been printed properly for end customer
  • Customer knows when print quality is a problem
  • Customer is able to use Microscan for all bar coding applications. The same model MS-820 can be used for all applications and is currently being used already in other applications in the facility. The only difference is setup of the reader
