Industry: Data Acquisition
Application: Liquor Production Control System

ADAM-4000 Series Used in Liquor Production Control System
Through a design on the mixing and forming liquor control system using ADAM-4000 DAQ modules, a distiller has improved its liquor's quality and productivity up to 95% throughput.

Introduction
Most of China's liquor distillers still applied very little automation in wine production. Old-date handwork operation requires lots of labors and yet can only generate fair productivity. After considering about total production costs, liquor's development cycle time and equipment’s maintenance, San-Xia Liquor Distiller decides to look at a solution to automate its production line.

System Requirements
The quality of liquor is decided from the fixed ratio of mixture. The mixing and forming adopt main liquor ingredients and software. San-Xia's chief engineer will constitute a small amount of prescription first and calculate the necessary volume of every main liquor ingredient. And they need an "automatic production and control system" for mass production which will carry out by batch volume through the completion of mixing, forming, sedimentation and storage. When the storage period expires, liquor must be filtered and conveyed to containers before the shipments.

San-Xia requests this automatic production and control system to guarantee the measurement and responding promptly for each container's liquor's level, flow speed in pipeline, the control electromagnetic valve's open/close and pump's on/off in real time base. All the monitored data shall be shown in the display at the control center.

System Description
After surveying the vendors, San-Xia decides to choose Advantech's ADAM-4000 series, an intelligent data acquisition and control modules.

There are four types of Advantech ADAM modules applied in this project: 1. ADAM-4017, 8-channel analog input module, used to measure the level of liquor through collecting 4-20mA signals from pressure transducers. 2. ADAM-4080D, counter/Frequency Module with two 32-bit counters used to count the impulse of flow meter to monitor the flow status inside the pipeline. 3. ADAM-4050, 8-channel digital output module, used to control the pump’s on/off, valves open/ close, etc. 4. ADAM-4520 provides a RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter and links the plant wide data with a twisted-wire network.

The Man-Machine-Interface (MMI) function is developed with Visual Basic, a Windows-based programming language. The MMI can provide multi-task graphical interface to show the information of current production process and levels of containers and sediment pool in control room. Through the MMI, the new system could minimize the unnecessary paperwork.

Conclusion
This new automatic production and control system has been run at San-Xia since 1997. It has proved to be a reliable solution. Comparing with the old system, the ratio of throughput of mixing and forming has risen up to 95%. The productivity is now 10 tons per hour which is 5 times of the old system. The annual productivity approaches 25 million tons and brings in San-Xia sales revenue of RMB 389 million dollars. San-Xia also passes the inspection and won the recognition of Hu-Pei Food and Drug Committee.
