Industry: SCADA
Application: Power SCADA System Implemented for Energy Usage Information Management

A Power SCADA System in an Intelligent Community
With Advantech products, a Power SCADA system was implemented for energy usage information management. With real-time information, energy costs were reduced and energy supply contracts could be firmly controlled.

Introduction
Energy costs can exceed 20% of total business costs. It is therefore obvious that by controlling the cost and quality of energy, large energy buyers can quickly reap benefits. When a large energy buyer approached a system integrator with the need to reduce energy costs, the answer was found with an Advantech solution consisting of a Single Board Computer and the PCI-1600 Series of Industrial Communication Cards. Old power meters could be replaced, so it was no longer necessary to monitor usage with door-to-door inspections, and the energy supply contractor greatly benefited from real-time instead of monthly energy usage information.

Project Background
The customer wanted to get rid of the labor-intensive task of door-to-door power usage inspections. With a signed energy supply contract, the customer received quality power, customized rates and usage capacity. However, power usage information management was an issue since the power company and the users could only receive updated information on a monthly basis. The customer needed real-time information to better control the energy costs and to ensure they could meet their contracted obligations. Key-in errors were common because of the manual entry of data. These could cause great loss, and the customer requested a system that removed this risk. The customer requested a PC-based system so that compatibility issues with other information systems in the enterprise could be resolved.

Advantages
- Supports RS-485-based digital power meters that can be connected to a central control room
- Distributes metered data and warning alarms over the Internet
- Reduces labor costs
- Delivers real-time and precise power measurements
- Provides power quality analysis and compliance reporting to help quickly characterize power usage.

Customer Benefits
- The customer’s PC-based real-time power usage information was integrated with an Ethernet network
- Efficient, flexible and reliable power management
- Helped manage the complex energy supply contract that included the energy supplier’s commitments to power quality and usage
- Automatic alarm notification when power usage is above limit
