back to Application Notes

Industry: Wire Cable Manufacturing
Application: Automated Cable Cutter Positioning

A wire and cable manufacturer needed a quicker and more precise method of spooling and cutting cable to customer-specified lengths on an adjustable cutting and crimp machine. Manual adjustment using a fixed scale and pointer to re-position cable grippers and cutters was time consuming and often inaccurate.

Balluff Solution
To increase accuracy and speed changeover times, Balluff's maintenance-free, non-contact Micropulse linear position sensor was installed in place of the fixed scale and pointer. Magnet control arms were attached to the machine's opposing cable grippers, relaying gripping position feedback (and thus, cable length) via differential output to the machine control. With sub-millisecond update times and the industry's best hysterisis of ±0.0001", the Micropulse provides quick and reliable gripper position feedback. Common cable lengths can now be programmed into machine control memory. These "recipes" can be recalled for instant changeover without manual gripper readjustment, reducing downtime and increasing throughput.
